This enlightening and empowering session can save money and prevent injuries! It offers attendees an in-depth working knowledge of serious hazards in excavation work dealing with issues from awareness, to avoidance and abatement techniques. Basic soil mechanics and suggestive trench rescue methods will be examined as well. The session incorporates relevant Federal OSHA standards and "school of hard knocks" experiences in the concrete construction industry.

  1. Understand how and why soil failures occur
  2. Explore effects of water, excessive vibration, tension cracks, surcharge loads, freezing and thawing
  3. Discuss shear strength, unconfined compressive strength, cohesion, stable rock and internal soil friction
  4. Learn methods of OSHA soil classification plus adequate sloping, shoring and/or shielding protection
